Robert Matthews – Chartered Wealth Manager, Poole office

“It is an early start for me, catching the 6.30am train to Branksome and then a 25 minute walk to the office in Canford Cliffs. I use the train journey to digest any overnight news that may influence the day ahead and also read through company announcements which could have a bearing on client portfolio holdings.

I am in the office by 7.45am at which time the first crucial job of the day is to brew a caffetiere, I can’t start my day without a freshly made coffee! It is then time to read through and respond to any emails received. At 8.30, the firm has its group wide morning call where analysts discuss macro-economic news and any updates companies have given. I am responsible for the oil and gas sector and will give my views and recommendations in this field. One of the reasons  I entered the industry was because I enjoy the analytical and research side of the role and so this is one of the areas of work that I am most interested in.

A typical morning will  involve discussing and analysing client portfolios and ensuring they continue to align with their needs and objectives. The past year has seen much political upheaval  and subsequent market volatility and it has been crucial ensuring that asset allocation is constantly monitored to ensure optimum results for clients. I will also be contacting clients and discussing their portfolios and how the wider global picture is affecting them.

Lunch will usually just be soup and a sandwich at the desk. We are required to do 35 hours Continuing Professional Development per year and so I may listen to CISI TV modules or read through the Professional Refresher Courses  to help towards this.

In the afternoon, I may be on the road visiting clients at their homes. At these meetings I will be giving them updates on their portfolios and also exploring any changes to their personal or financial circumstances which may warrant a review of their objectives and portfolio structure.  The South Coast of England is regularly voted as the best place in the UK to retire and as such many of our clients fall into this group. With interest rates remaining low for a prolonged period, a chief theme has been to help clients achieve a higher income return than cash held on deposit.

I may also in the afternoon have a meeting with a particular fund management group. These are very useful in gauging their views on economic outlook and the investment cases for a particular region or asset class.  At 5 o clock it is time for the pleasant walk back through Canford Cliffs to the train station.”
